Teaching applicants who wish to work on INITIAL Alternative Type I or II licenses must meet State qualifications BEFORE being hired. Teachers who have taught on the Alternative Type I or II license during the previous year must meet renewal qualifications before being hired.

Employment Procedure Announcement
The Hickman County School System accepts employment applications for licensed positions and support staff positions as they are submitted. Openings for support staff are limited except in the area of School Bus Driver. Applications for substitute teaching are accepted until the pool of applicants reaches a level where there is no reasonable possibility that an applicant would be called to substitute.
All applications are purged yearly if not updated. If you have an application on file that is more than six (6) months old and you want to keep it active, you should contact Elaine Dean at 931-729-3391, extension 2245 to make the request that the application be updated and remain active.
For those teachers on a preferred hiring list, Board Policy requires that you inform the Director of Schools, in writing, the status of your availability and current address. The school system request that you supply this information by May 15 of each school year.

In all cases, interviews are by invitation.

ESL and EFL Qualifications
Qualified ESL and EFL educators not only should demonstrate a high level of written and oral proficiency in the English language (regardless of native language), but also should demonstrate teaching competency. Moreover, qualified ESL and EFL educators should be aware of current trends and research and their instructional implications in the fields of linguistics, applied linguistics, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, language pedagogy and methodology, literacy development, curriculum and materials development, assessment, and cross-cultural communication. The Hickman County School district will utilize the following methods to determine the competency and qualifications ofprospective ESL and EFL educators.
Fluency in English. Fluency is defined as having oral proficiency in English that consists of comprehension and production. Production is defined as accurate and efficient oral communication using appropriate pronunciation, intonation, grammar, and vocabulary in an interactive professional context. The following section discusses how the Hickman County School district officials make the fluency determination.
Methods for Determining Fluency Determining teaching staffs fluency in English should be made through one or more ofthe following methods:
classroom observation and assessment by the teacher’s supervisor, principal, and/or superintendent or
an interview and assessment by the teacher’s supervisor, principal, and/or superintendent or
the teacher’s demonstration of fluency in English through a test accepted by the Commissioner ofEducation; and/or another method determined by the superintendent
Method for Determine Reading Fluency
Determining teaching staffs fluency in reading in English will be determined through the following method.
• Find a passage(s) of approximately 250 words written in English and have the teacher read the passage aloud. The observer will note both the fluency of the reading and the errors.
Method for Determining Writing Fluency
Determining teaching staff’s fluency in writing in English will be determined through the following method.
The teacher will be provided with a writing prompt. At that time they will be required to prepare a written response to that prompt. The following is an example of a prompt that may be utilized.
Some people feel that the public school system does not adequately prepare students for the real world. Identify one improvement you think: schools need to make in order to better prepare students for life after high school. Write a letter to the school board in which you describe this improvement and explain why it is needed.
